Piano Report &
Repair Quotes.

Thank you for the opportunity to come in and tune the 3 pianos at Christ the King Lutheran Church. As a pianist and music educator of over 30 years, not only do I approach these instruments as the amazing machines that they are, but always bring the perspective of a life long musician to the process of bringing every piano what it needs to be able to create the most beautiful music!

After tuning each instrument back in January, I created documentation of the current condition of the pianos, and have made recommendations as to what work could and should be done to help bring them back to their most functional and musical best.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out via email at ronald@weilercreativemedia.com, or text me at 248-892-4237, I’ll be happy to work out a plan for your church’s musical needs!

This piano is in the roughest condition of all three of the instruments I worked on in January. It shows lots of signs of consistent use, but not always the proper care and maintenance that should keep a piano playing well for decades. Fortunately there are some simple processes that can make a monumental difference in the piano’s playability, musical aesthetics and longevity. Following is a breakdown of the services recommended and a description of what would be done for the instrument! The noted issues the piano is currently having (ie, sticky keys, missing parts of key rail adjuster, noisy action) would all be covered by these services. Below, items 2 - 4 are subsets of the Full Restorative Service, and are a cost savings as it only requires a single disassembly.

  • $900 - vertical

This is a "full maintenance refurbishing” service! it includes:

    * CORRECTIVE REGULATION

For this service, I will come to the church, remove the action and bring it back to my work shop. Here, I will fully lubricate and tighten all the moving parts of each key whippen (the “action” of each note). If there are any broken parts that can be easily repaired or replaced this will be done as part of the service, unless it is something more substantial. Usually the parts would be inexpensive and unless it were something major, or involving multiple key actions, would not impact the service price. The initial evaluation did not reveal any broken parts, however, the action currently is very noisy. This indicates that most of the parts of the action have worked their way loose, and while they are still holding together, there is far too much “play” resulting in noisy parts. In this situation, issues will continue to surface suck as double strike keys, sticky keys, and other irregularities. This services will eliminate most, if not all, of those issues that currently exist and also the conditions that cause them to arise.

    *BASIC VOICING

The hammers on your piano do have significant grooving, and compact felt. The best place to start is to try to revive the existing felt. I am confident that for the most part, a much more satisfactory tone can be achieved through voicing. In this case, this grooving and compacted hammers are resulting in a very bring, almost piercing tone, so this service is highly recommended. Each hammer will be given individual attention to remove the grooving and then shape and soften the remaining felt. I think this alone will make a big difference in the sound of your piano, and is done most easily in combination with the corrective regulation, as it also requires removal and transportation of the action.

    *BASIC CLEANING

Upon the return of the action, each key will be removed, and the area underneath vacuumed (there are always surprises under the keys!) and each key cleaned and returned to it’s original location. The serviced action is then reinstalled and each note is tested and any final adjustments needed are made. The function of each note, again, is guaranteed for as long as I am tuning your piano and any note that starts misbehaving will be readjusted for no cost. The only exception would be if a part were to actually break. This usually takes about 2-3 days to complete, but I imagine yours might take a little longer. I would need probably 2-4 hours in the rehearsal space when the action is returned to do the key cleaning/lubrication as well as make any final adjustments.

  • $500

This would be ONLY the corrective regulation described above.

  • $600

This would be ONLY the voicing process for the hammers in the piano as described above.

  • $250

This would involve ONLY the cleaning described above. The action would be removed (required to remove the keys) and each key cleaned and the areas in the piano revealed would be vacuumed out and then all parts returned.

  • $200

The knee board is missing on this piano. This covered a majority of the open area and makes the instrument considerably louder than it should be, especially in an enclosed space. For the safety of the choir’s hearing (as well as the music director’s) I highly recommend having this either found or fabricated. Construction and installation included in this quote.

  • $150 (also must have tuned at time of service).

Often pianos of this age develop issues with the tuning pins. As the wood in the pin block dries and contracts slightly, the pins may become loose, or otherwise inconsistent with the way they hold their place (and therefore the pitch of the string). At this time, I do not feel this is needed, but it is something that can be done in the future if it is determined that it is not holding a tune well and/or becomes more difficult to tune due to slipping tuning pegs.

“The work you did on the piano is exquisite! It’s clear that you fussed over every hammer, and screw, and other parts of the mechanisms for each note. The piano is a dream to play now. The tone is restored to its original beauty, and the keys plays so much smoother now. Truly, your work is admirable. I can’t thank you enough for the care and skill you put into re-voicing, and regulating. A true craftsman! “ - Daniel Greig, Director of Music at St. Mary of the Hills, Rochester Hills, MI

This is a nice, reliable piano. It shows evidence of having work done in the past, such as heavy glue around the hammer shanks.

For a piano at this stage in its life and especially one that clearly gets heave use, I recommend the “full restorative service” as outlined in the first piano. These maintenance procedures prevent most common issues for years, if not decades to come, and keep the piano in it’s best playable and musical condition. However, realizing that having this done to two pianos at once may be cost prohibitive, below are some specific things that should be fixed, and then a prioritization of the other services that would be beneficial. Keep in mind, everything below would be included in a Full Restorative Service, and if the budget allowed, I would be happy to do both pianos!

  • $500

This process involves going through each key and tightening all the screws, lubricating all the pivot points, revitalizing the felts and making any adjustments needed to make each note playable. On this piano, the dampers in octave 4 are partially out of alignment, this would be specifically addressed.

Repair the center bolt on the internal key rail (bolt replaced/washers added and/or redrilled). Also, adjustments to the front keyboard rail/cover (causing keys to stick) to provide a more permanent fix than the makeshift “wedges” installed at last tuning.

  • $600

The hammers are showing their age and the voicing process would be extremely advantageous to the overall tone of the piano. Also, as the instrument is so close to people when it’s played, the harsh tone can be damaging to hearing and the voicing process softens this considerably.

  • $250

Each Key will be removed, cleaned, and the interior of the instrument vacuumed out while the keys and action are removed, and each key returned and lubricated. It was noted at the last tuning that there was a lot of dust/debree inside the piano, which can often lead to mechanical issues. Cleaning highly recommended on this piano.

What a gorgeous instrument! It is very appropriately located in a place of pride near the front of the church. This piano appeared to be in excellent condition. It has a lovely tone, and the action is quiet and solid. Outside of regular tuning, there is no recommended further service for this instrument at this time!
